Jan grew up on a dairy farm in New Hartford, Connecticut.  After graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in microelectronic engineering in 1996, he joined the research and development division of Eastman Kodak Company and was later promoted to a management position.  In 2005 he and his wife, Shannon, left their jobs in Rochester, NY, and moved to Dover, where they have purchased a home and started a family.  His wife is a radiologist with Seacoast Radiology.  Jan and Shannon have been married for five years.  Their son, Griffin, was born in 2006.

Some people have asked how to pronounce Jan’s name.  It’s a Czech spelling of ‘John’, and is pronounced ‘Yahn’.

Since moving to Dover, Jan has participated in a variety of volunteer activities, and served on a number of bodies, including:

-Dover Main Street, a downtown business and community advocacy group with a a mission to "preserve the past, promote the present & facilitate the future".  Many of the downtown events, activities, and decorations are Main Street projects.

-Dover Arena Commission, a committee of citizen volunteers which meets monthly to review the operations and plans of the Dover Ice Arena.  This committee makes recommendations to the facilities operators and provides feedback to the council on matters that impact the quality and the profits of the facility.  Jan served a three-year term on the committee.

-Our House for Girls, a residential shelter for teen girls located in Dover.  Our House for Girls is design to provide a structured environment for young women who might otherwise be at risk; the ultimate goal is family reunification and to foster the girls' capacity to live and thrive in the adult world.  Jan has served on the board of directors for four years.

-AARP Tax-Aide, a program which provides free tax preparation and filing for people of all ages.  Jan has volunteered with the  program in a variety of capacities, including helping Dover residents file their taxes for free at the public library.  Jan now is the State Coordinator for the state of New Hampshire, overseeing the program with over 50 locations statewide.  Jan has been volunteering with

-2010 Dover City Council.  Elected in the 2009 election, Jan is finishing his first term as a Councilor.
